News

1/15/12 I guess I must be getting old, I did not brave the snow for a dive... Bummer. But I did get out for a couple dives yesterday at Alki and had a great time. The viz is very good and as always there is a lot to see out there. There were also a lot of classes going on, mostly in wet suits. Made me shiver. Glad we do all our classes in dry suits!!!

1/1/2012 a NEW YEAR!! 2012 is here! The diving is getting colder, down to about 48 degrees at depth. And for a bit there the viz was remarkable, but lately it has not been as good. The Winds and now the rain will dampen it a bit, but we will still be getting out there often. The big Octo is at the small boat by the Radar dome at the T-Dock. He looks to be getting ready to die so if you want to see him and say good bye, you best be doing it soon. He sits outside the boat and does not move much, so good time to get some close up pictures.

12/6/11 Boat Capsized, Octo implicated!!! The deep boat at the T-Dock is now upside down! Not sure how or when that happened or what happened to the Octo on eggs in it, but hopefully they are OK. Another LARGE octo was found a bit farther up by the smaller boat. She is very big and a bit feisty. Next time you are down by the Radar Dome, stop by and see is she is still there. Can't miss the mess she is making.

12/3/11 Thanks to all of you that showed up for the 'BARE' show. They have some really exciting new products coming out, and the SB line is getting better all the time.
The dive club meeting is coming up this wednesday at the AFK Tavern. There should be some news coming out at the meeting. So stop on by and see what's up!

11/26/11 - A big thanks goes out to all of you that stopped by and kept Aaron busy on black Friday.
Had a nice dive on Thanksgiving morning and found the Octo and two wolfe eels at the geo dome. It was the first time I had seen the wolfe eels for a bit, so that was nice. The viz was not as good as it has been, but sill not too bad considering all the rain we have had. Hopefully by Thursday it will have settled a bit and cleared up.

11/21/11 - Our next big event is coming up! The Bare rep will be at the store on Dece 3rd. Look for the flyer coming out later this week and be sure to put the date in your calendar so you can see what it new for exposure protection from BARE.

10/24/11 - ScubaPro Rep JoeG was in the shop to go over the new products for the coming year. As always, he had great stuff to show, and lots of good education on the gear they have. He even left a few gifts for a couple folks in attendance. If you were not able to make it for the demo, stop by and ask what the latest and greatest ScubaPro gear is.
10/9/11 - Shop news: We are in the final stages of the back room remodel. Once done, there will be easier access to the gear in the back room. This will include an area for rental, for tanks that have been filled, and a new bathroom and changing area. The compressor room is being enclosed to help dampen the noise and there will be another area that can be used for classes. Look for the new look in the coming weeks!

Aaron has one his Videos in a PADI contest. There is a link on the home page, (Here it is again in case you missed it: Aaron's Video) Check it out and vote for it. We need all the good northwest votes we can get! Thanks!

10/2/11 - Well it looks like fall is here. The Thursday dives are now oficially night dives! So make sure you bring you lights!
The Octo is still at the boat. The eggs are still there and she is looking pretty healthy. We will be keeping an eye on her to see how things progress.
And speaking of Octo's, another small one was found at the T-Dock and today we saw three of them. One was HUGE!!! It is at Cove 2 in about 40 FSW. It is in the mound of rocks over toward the HOney Bear. Unbelievable in size. We also found two small ones in the open. One was using some kelp to hide under as it was walking aboud and the other was doing its best to look like fish. And it really did. It was almost impossible to tell it was really an Octo. Very cool.

9/10/11 - Ocoto found on boat!! OK maybe this is not new news, but an octo has been found on the boat at the T-Dock. I totally misser her as I was looking in the usual place under the boat. Turns out she moved to a comfey place inside the boat, under a seat. And I am told she has laid eggs there. It will be fun to follow the progression of these into the winter. Check her out if you get down there and let us know how she is doing.

9/5/2011 - The summer is coming to an end just as the weather is starting to get nice, go figure. However the cool summer seems to have brought some better viz for us. This past week it was very good both at Alki and at Mukilteo. And I got a report from SUnd Rock that the viz is good and there are lots of critters out.

The September rescue class has been pushed back to October but this is firm. Only room for a couple more so call if you are interested. However there is a boat dive on the books for September 25th. Call the shop for details.

I hope you are enjoying these last few good days of the summer and getting some good diving it.

8/28/11 - The Viz has been very good of late, both at the T-Dock and at Alki cove 2. Also heard a good report for the Keystone dive. SO this past weekend made up for the bad day we had at Port Townsend. Hope many of you are getting out and enjoying it now. I fear a 'bloom' may be upon us with all this nice weather, but lets's hope not. This coming weekend is Labor day, and I for one do not go very far. However, if anyone is interested in dive on Sunday or Monday, let us know at the shop and we can see what we can do about getting a few of us together.

There will be a rescue class in September. A few spots are already spoken for, but if you are interested, please call soon so we can reserve a spot for you.

8/7/2011 - We had our club dive this past weekend with a good turnout of folks. Unfortunately it was not a good day for diving. The weather did not cooperate and went so far as preventing the ferry from getting across on time due to fog. Then, despite all our planning, the currents were not good. The schedules told us the currents would be flat clam, but they were anything but calm. We ended up loosing track of the rope that we were trying to follow and were pretty much "swept away". Fortunately we all ended up fine. Our take home lesion from this was that in spite of all the planning, it is good to be flexible as the Sound will do what it wants, no matter what the tides books tell us.

7/18/11 - The boat dive on the Lu Jacs this past weekend was another great day on the sound! The weather was cloudy but there was no wind so the water was flat which made the trip out easy. The start of the trip was a bit rough, as there was gear that was left behind. It reminds us all that it is always a good idea to double check to make sure all the needed gear is in the car for the trip to the boat. This time things turned out well, extra gear was pieced together and all were able to make these dives.
The Viz was not too bad, the currents were gentle and the Puget Sound King Crabs were out in force. More than one very large specimen was found. Seeing these beautiful critters made the dive unforgettable. Will hopefully be having another trip planned soon, so stay tuned!

6/27/11 - Another class is finished and they got very lucky. The viz for the open water dives was very good. Not great, but very good considering how bad it has been of late. Unfortunately one had to put off the open water dives due to allergies reeking havoc with her sinuses.

Also did a fun dive after the class and found that the parking at Mukilteo state park is not that great when the weather turns nice. We were turned away from even trying to park and had to settle for the T-Dock. I certainly can not complain though as the water was nice and the dive pleasant. However I will be more careful in trying to get into the State park side on nice Sunday afternoon. And then there is Crabbing season. It open this coming weekend which means the water will be thick with divers! Watch those poor crabs disappear!!

6/5/11. A week late, but the sun made it's appearance, wouldn't it have been nice to have it last weekend? But it did bring out the crowds at Mukilteo. There were very few parking spots left and there were lots of divers in the water. The viz is getting a bit better and hopefully with this weather, it will do nothing but improve. Hope a lot of you were able to get in the water this weekend.
Our compressor is still waiting on parts to get repaired, but we expect some this Tuesday. So hopefully we will be back up and running on Wednesday. We are very sorry for this and are working hard to resolve it as soon as we can. Matt at Northwest Sport Divers has been gracious enough to help us out with this.

5/30/11 Happy Memorial Day! And a big thank you to all who are or have served in the Armed Forces.
Well this months class did not meet the nasty cold Northwest welcome that prior classes have recieved, but they were treated to some of the worst viz around! At times it was less than 6 inches, and at others it was actually almost 5 feet. But they all did a great job of getting in there and getting the skills done. All earned their open water "C" card. Congratulations!!! Now let's go dive!

This class includes - front left to right - Matthew, Nick(In front), Josh, Chritiani(Divemaster), Kevin, Rick(Instructor), Peter, Demetrio(Instructor), Paul, Charlie(Instructor), Kevin and Kevin. Yes there were 3 Kevins....

5/17/11  There were a few of us that braved the wet weather to go to Sund Rock for a couple of dives. The viz was interesting, kinda clear to about 15 feet, then pea soup to 38, then clear. Strange, but not too bad. Though it made it tough to see where things were from a distance. The dives were good and the most interesting thing we found was the sea whips. Pretty cool to find them as easily as we did. And at that depth they were about the only things we saw. Oh well, i hear the viz is starting to clear, so maybe we will have better viz this summer. Thanks to Ryan for setting this up, to Bill for diving with us and to Bruce for keeping me company on the trip. Hopefully we can get back down there when the viz improves.

5/1/11 New class schedule is going to be posted soon. We are implementing a slightly different format with the hopes that we can get more specialty classes in. Keep checking back and look under Calendar of events to see the lastest updates.

4/30/11 Had some great weather and dives at Keystone! We had a good turnout for this and there were many other divers for other shops to enjoyed the water with us. The viz was actually pretty good for a low tide dive, and the currents were not too bad. The usual fun sea life was all around though I did not see any Octos this time. Lots of other stuff to be seen though. We will be at Alki this coming weekend and hope a lot of you can make that one.

4/24/11 Happy Easter! Well the sun came out for one day and now it is gone again. I hope some of you got out to dive as we did at the T-Dock. The weather was picture perfect but the viz was Puget poor!! It did clear up after about 60 feet, but about that looked like an early bloom. One the first dive we made it to the boat and saw the Octo. At first all I saw was a white arm deep inside so i went to the other side of the boat. Turns out she has moved to the port side of the boat, eggs and all! She is looking a bit whiter, but still has a lot of color in her. Not sure how much longer she has. I did not get good pictures as she was pretty deep under the boat.

We also had our usual Thursday afternoon dive and had a good turnout. I only took a couple pictures, but had one of a fish that i am not sure about. If anyone can tell me what this fish is, please do so at that dive club email.

4/18/11 The boat dive was good, though not great. The weather was certainly as good as it gets, but the viz was mediocre at best. Ryan did get a good picture of a Puget Sound King Crab and I will try to post that soon. Below are a couple of the pictures I got.

4/17/11 Nothing like a busy weekend! The First Anniversary sale was Saturday and the boat dive was Sunday. The sale was great, attended by a large crowd and some very good deals were had.  Below are a few of the pictures. Thanks to all who joined in for the fun!

4/11/11 BIG News from the front page is the shop sale this weekend. Everyone come on down, hear about the latest gear and enter to win some great prizes.

4/6/11 I did two dives in Lake Chelan. The surprises there was that the water was not as cold as we expected, it was a balmy 42 degrees, and the viz was not as clear as we expected. It looked to be about 30 feet or so. Did not see too much. There was a sheep barge at Fields Landing that had been used to bare sheep up lake and did see two fish. Not much else, but the gear was very clean after the dives!!!

4/1/11 Did another dive this afternoon to get to the Octo. Figured we would need to be prepared for the bad viz and planned on following the chain down off the bouy. Surprisingly the viz was not as bad as yesterday and there was even a little light getting through. We did find the Octo and she is not looking too bad. The eggs are getting bigger, but my camera had issues turning on, so I did not get any new pictures. We all agreed that we need to get back there soon.

3/31/11 The Thursday night dive encountered some interesting water conditions. As can be expected, the flooding has had a big impact on the viz. This evening it was pretty much zero viz till about 20 feet. After that it cleared but was dark. Took us back to the night diving days. Two divers got separated before getting below the muck and wisely went back up.

3/27/11 Had a report from TerryM that the Octo is looking pretty blanched, and that the egg sacks are getting very large. So if you want to see the Octo and eggs, try to get out there soon. I will be attempting to get out there soon and will update the site with info.

3/26/11 This was a busy weekend for training. The March Open Water class did a great job with 6 students getting certified, a few did not make it due to illness or work, but we look forward to seeing them in the next class. We also had our first EFR course after the open water class. We now have 4 more divers that are certified in CPR and First Aid. Look for more classes in the coming weeks.

3/19/11 The dive to the Octo at Mukilteo was canceled per below, but a few of us headed to Alki for a fun dive at Cove 2. The weather was great and Aaron found a dying Octo that was being reclaimed by a Ling. I did not hear if he got video of it, but knowing Aaron, he did. Let's all ask him about it next time we get to the shop!!!

3/17/11  I was hoping for a green St Pattys day with the Thursday afternoon dive, but no, the site was closed! There is work going on at the Ferry terminal and apparently at the breakwater at Ivars. So there was no dive... Bummer.

Report is that it is closed until this Wednesday. We will have to check to see if it will be open for our Thursday night dive and for the classes on Saturday.

2/26/11 Demitrio led a group of what can only be described as polar bears as they finished their Open Water cert. The morning was very cold, about 19 degrees, and before we got in the water for the first dive, it started to snow. And it did not stop till we were long gone. But these hardy souls did great! They can truly say they got certified in some EXTREME conditions! Sunday was a bit nicer at Alki, but it was still on the cold side. (Sorry I missed getting Montana and Joe in the water - you guys will have to let me take you picture next time you go out.) Congrats to you guys for getting certified in really cold weather, you are now ready for anything!!!

2/21/11 Went out to the boat and found the octo down there. However this time she has a bunch of eggs! Yes indeed, we have a family being hatched in Mukilteo! We have some video of her along with a few pictures and hope to get more to document the incubation and hopefully get the release on film. And on the same dive had tow wolf eels come out to play. They were both swimming all around and through our gear. They were both at the Geo dome so look for them next time you are there.

2/5/11 - Had a nice afternoon dive at the T-Dock. Went down close to the boat and found the jungle gym down there. We found it very easily and it is still there, along with a boat. The Viz was not too bad and it should be getting better as the weather is getting better. Also found a small Wolf Eel at the dome, so next time you go down stop by and say hi to him.

12/9/10 - Thursday shop dive had a good turnout. Went down by the log at the south end of the training line to see if we could spot the Wolf eels that are reported to be in that area. No luck there. Did find a few very small red shrimp... not sure what kind yet. Then headed to the dome and found it to be in good shape. Aaron has done a lot of good repairs to it of late. After that we headed up by the T-Dock and found a shy Wolf eel. Very pretty orange color still but he did not want to come out and play. On the line headed back up, there was a Pipe fish and I found another at about 10 feet on the way back to shore. That one was a good sized one, very cool!
Thanks to those that made it! Looking forward to next Thursday.

12/4/10 - Shore dive at Langley. Good viz, BIG ling cod. It was truly a great day for a dive. Blue skies, bright sunshine, cool water. What more can you ask for.
12/3/10 - Geodome repair at Mukilteo T-Dock was done today. Sides were repaired and half of the blocks were secured by poles into the seafloor. Please let us know if you see any damage to the dome.
11/21/10 - Mukilteo was a bit murky today, and it stayed that way to at least 70ft. Did not go deeper so it might be better below that. The Geo dome is partly crushed with one side bent. This happened just after the last big wind storm we had, so that was most likely the culprit. The one Wolfe Eel is still there and there is another juvenile by the T-Dock.
